If you drive a VW Golf MK8 R, Audi RS3, or Audi S3, you already have a strong foundation. The EA888 Gen.4 and EA855 EVO engines are naturally powerful — but still leave a lot of potential unused in standard configuration.
At MTR Performance, we see daily what is truly possible. Not based on manufacturer claims or theoretical calculations, but based on our own Dynojet 424xLC2 4x4 power bench in Rhoon. In this article, we share the 7 upgrades we most often recommend — and what they deliver in practice.
1. Cold Air Intake / Performance air intake
What it is: a replacement for the standard air intake system that draws cooler air from outside the engine bay instead of warm air from inside the engine bay itself.
What it delivers:
- Better airflow towards the turbo
- Lower intake temperature
- Sharper throttle response
- Measurable effect on the dyno
The RacingLine R600 Cold Air Intake is one of the most popular upgrades we install on Golf R and S3. On our own S3 8Y Stage 2 build, the R600 was the first hardware upgrade — partly thanks to this intake we achieved 467 hp and 618 Nm.

2. Performance intercooler
What it is: a larger and more efficient intercooler that cools the air going to the turbo.
Why this is the most important hardware upgrade:
The standard intercooler of the Golf R, RS3, and S3 is designed for factory power — not for Stage 2 levels. At higher outside temperatures or repeated hard accelerations, the standard intercooler heats up quickly. Once the intake air temperature rises, the ECU automatically reduces power to protect the engine.
A performance intercooler solves this. On hot summer days or during intensive use, this is the difference between consistent performance and noticeable drop-off.
What we see in our own projects: an upgraded intercooler is the best Stage 2 build option focused on performance.

3. Performance downpipe
What it is: a replacement for the standard exhaust pipe directly after the turbo, with less backpressure and better flow.
What it delivers:
- Less exhaust backpressure = more space for the turbo
- Faster turbo response
- Measurable effect on power and torque
- Sportier exhaust sound
On our own Golf MK7.5 R Stage 2 projects, we consistently see the downpipe as one of the most impactful hardware upgrades alongside the intercooler. On the Golf MK7.5 R 2018, we achieved 404 hp and 567 Nm with Stage 2 including downpipe — an increase of +94 hp and +187 Nm compared to OEM.

4. Turbo inlet
What it is: an improved intake pipe directly before the turbo that reduces turbulence in the airflow.
What it delivers:
- Optimized airflow to the turbo
- Better turbo efficiency
- Sharper response at partial throttle
- Plug & play installation
The standard turbo inlet of the Golf R, RS3, and S3 is designed for production efficiency. The aftermarket version — like the HF-Series Turbo Inlet we use on our RS4 B9 and S3 8Y projects — removes the turbulence present in the standard system. A relatively simple upgrade with measurable effect on the dyno.

5. ECU tuning
What it is: rewriting the engine software (ECU) for optimal performance based on your specific car, hardware, and fuel.
What it roughly delivers — our own dyno results:

ECU tuning is the foundation of every build. Without good software, hardware has little purpose — and without good hardware, software cannot reach its full potential. The best results always come when both are matched.
At MTR, every tune is validated on our own 4x4 dyno — not based on a generic file.

6. DSG TCU tuning
What it is: adjusting the transmission software (TCU) of the DSG gearbox, tuned to the increased engine power after ECU tuning.
Why this is essential:
This is the component that is most often overlooked — and that is a mistake.
The Golf MK8 R, RS3, and S3 come factory-equipped with a DQ381 DSG transmission. The standard transmission software is tuned for the factory power output. Once the ECU tune increases power and torque, the TCU lags behind: torque limits are set too low, and shift points are not synchronized with the new engine output.
TCU tuning solves this:
- Higher torque limits matching the increased engine power
- Sharper and faster shift points
- Improved launch control
- ECU and DSG work as one system
In our Golf MK8 R Stage 2 project with 484 hp, the TCU DQ381 tune is standard. Without that tune, the transmission could not properly handle the torque increase of +168 Nm.

7. Upgraded spark plugs
What it is: replacement of the standard spark plugs with a version that reliably ignites under higher cylinder pressure and temperatures.
Why this is necessary:
Standard spark plugs are designed for factory power. At Stage 2 levels — higher cylinder pressure, higher temperatures, higher load — they are no longer sufficient for reliable ignition. Misfires under load result, harming both performance and reliability.
NGK RS7 upgraded spark plugs are one of the cheapest but most effective upgrades in a Stage 2 build. We install them as standard in almost all projects where engine power increases significantly.
Relatively low cost, direct impact on reliability. An upgrade you never want to skip.

Which upgrade first?
The order depends on your goal and budget. As a rule of thumb, at MTR we use the following:
Software only, no hardware modifications: → ECU tuning Stage 1 + TCU tuning. Immediate results, no mechanical changes.
Stage 2 — maximum gain with hardware excluding turbo: → Cold air intake + turbo inlet + intercooler + downpipe + ECU tuning Stage 2 + TCU tuning + upgraded spark plugs. This is the full Stage 2 setup we use in our own projects.
